Thomas Wainwright Stephenson was the fourth child of Thomas Stephenson & Ann Wainwright born Jan-March, 1875 at Port Clarence, Co Durham.
Thomas was living at home in 1881 at 13 Lawson St, Stockton with his 3 brothers, a sister & parents.
In 1891 Thomas was staying with his grandparents, Elizabeth & Thomas Stephenson, at the time of the census at the High St, Stokesley, Yorks. Thomas was working as a gardener.
Thomas married Margaret Mannell on September 5th, 1901 at Stokesley. Margaret was born c1877 at Wheatley Hill, Co Durham, the daughter of Mary & Richard Mannell, a fireman. Thomas was a railway station foreman & witnesses at the wedding were Alice Earles & Thomas Stephenson.
By 1902 Thomas & Margaret had emigrated to South Africa. They had a son, Thomas Mannell, who was christened on June 30th, 1902 at St Luke’s, Salt River, Cape Town. Their address at that time was 76 Malta Rd, Salt River & Thomas was a station foreman. Sadly little Thomas died aged 3 years on July 19th, 1905, the cause of death being (i) Periostitis & (ii) meningitis. The place of death was Letjesbosch Station, Beaufort West.
Thomas died on June 13th, 1906 at Railway Cottage, Fraserburg Rd Station, Fraserburg, Cape Province as stated in probate records at Cape Town, South Africa dated July 4th, 1906. The cause of death was phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis).
Thomas’ widow Margaret returned to England & was living with his mother Ann, also widowed, in 1911 at West Brunton, Northallerton, Yorks. Her sister in law, Dorothy Ann Stephenson was also living there. Margaret was described as of private means & it was noted on the census that Margaret & Thomas had had 2 children both of whom had sadly died.
